South Australian seniors are being urged to be aware of scam websites which attempt to charge applicants a fee in exchange for a Seniors Card. The misleading websites claim to be ‘officially approved’ and charge applicants a fee of $29 to coordinate the application process.

The legitimate SA Seniors Card is always free of charge (not including replacement cards which are subject to a $15 fee).

Who can apply?

You can apply for a South Australian Seniors Card if:

• you're aged 60 years or older
• you're a permanent South Australian resident
• you're not working more than 20 hours per week in paid employment (part-time and casual employees may average their hours over a 12 month period).

How to apply?

To apply online you'll need one of these:

• driver's license number
• Medicare number
• pension card number.

There is no income or pension limit and the initial card is issued free of charge. (Replacement Seniors Cards are subject to a $15 fee, unless you are a Pensioner Concession Card holder).

Other ways to apply

1. Pick up an application form from a South Australian public library. Find your nearest library. (external site)
2. You must sign the form in front of someone who is over 18 years of age and not related to you. They must sight your birth certificate, driver's license, passport or a similar document as proof of your date of birth.
3. Post or fax the completed application form to the Seniors Card Unit.

What happens next?

You'll receive your new card in approximately two weeks. Your card is ready to use on public transport and at participating businesses as soon as you receive it.
