Amongst many things that we plan for our domestic or international trips, Travel Insurance is an important consideration. To get the right level of cover though, there are a few things you should think about when evaluating your options.

Below, we go over some of the things you should consider when you’re looking for a travel insurance policy for your needs.

1. Where are you going?

Our primary decider would be if you’re travelling domestic, going on an international holiday, or going on a cruise.

The second thing to consider would be if all your destinations are covered by travel insurance, including the ports you may be stopping at for a few hours if you’re on a cruise.

Travel Insurance companies, such as InsureandGo, combine countries into regions, making it easier for you to ensure multiple destinations are covered.

2. How old are you?

Consider looking into the level of coverage on offer for your age and the age of people who are travelling with you. Some insurers cover children (up to a certain age) for no charge if they are accompanying their parents or grandparents.

InsureandGo for example, covers Seniors up to the age of 100 (up to the age of 80 for Cruise Policies).

3. Decide what you need covered

Different insurance policies include and exclude cover for certain things and situations, depending on the product and level of cover you select. To make sure you are covered for all your needs, make a list of things and/or activities you know you need cover for.

While most policies will cover you for standard items – like medical/hospital and emergency, trip cancellation, baggage – think about what other areas you need cover for. These can include:

  • Any trip disruptions or medical expenses due to COVID-19
  • Any sports and activities you plan to participate in
  • If you plan to drive a car or vehicle while you’re away
  • Any valuables you will be taking with you (e.g., camera, iPad, laptop)

InsureandGo offer coverage for COVID-19 with their Single Trip and Cruise Policies* (Silver and Gold). You can add on cover for activities like Winter Sports that can come in handy if you need medical assistance or want coverage for your equipment.

4. What limits will best suit you?

While calculating an exact amount for the coverage you need can be tricky, it is useful to know as you can use it to evaluate the level of coverage you can get with a travel insurance policy. For example, consider the expenses for your trip – It can include flights, accommodation, tours, activities, baggage, and valuables.

Remember, the right level of inclusions with your travel insurance policy will ensure you are covered for your needs.

5. Do You Have a Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

Pre-existing medical conditions should not stop you from going on a holiday, but they are an important consideration when you’re looking for travel insurance. If you or your travel companion have any pre-existing medical conditions, then look for policies that will cover you if you need medical attention as a result of those medical conditions.

InsureandGo offer 24-hour emergency assistance and consider all pre-existing medical conditions. They do not require any medical certificates upfront upon application.

6. Read the Product Disclosure Statement Carefully

This is a good way to understand what your policy involves and whether it is right for you and your trip. You should take note of:

  • Any specific inclusions and exclusions
  • Conditions surrounding cover levels or items
  • Circumstances, actions, or events that might exclude you from cover (e.g., driving while under the influence)

Taking out travel insurance should not be a daunting experience. If you need help understanding how travel insurance works, make sure to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) or contact your provider before you buy to understand your options. InsureandGo can help explain the ins-and-outs of your policy to you.
