Older LGBTIQA+ people deserve to age well. Unfortunately for many, that takes some extra planning, especially if you live in regional, rural, or remote South Australia.

Did you know:

  • More than a third of LGBTIQA+ people may hide their sexual orientation or gender identity when they go into elder care for fear of discrimination and mistreatment.
  • An unmarried same-sex partner may not be recognised as the appropriate medical power of attorney, or as the next of kin. These responsibilities may be assigned to a person’s blood relations, even if they are estranged.
  • While those in a de-facto relationship legally have the same rights as de-facto straight couples, without the right paperwork it can be problematic to prove the relationship upon bereavement, especially if the deceased’s blood relatives do not recognise or support the surviving partner.
  • As an LGBTIQA+ person, you have the right to age well in your local community. It is important to know your rights, and to be connected to services that can support you.

Presented in partnership with The Equality Project, Office for Ageing Well and Seniors Card, The Festival for the Future will bring these supportive services to the regions.

The event will be held in Mount Gambier, on 2-3 October 2024.
