Do you love gardening but find it a challenge? Join a free six-week series of workshops in Christie Downs aimed at making gardening more accessible, safe and enjoyable.

Held at the City of Onkaparinga’s Elizabeth House Positive Ageing Centre, each weekly two-hour session includes practical activities, adaptive gardening tips and demonstrations, to help you garden with confidence and ease.

The program has been designed to empower older adults and people with physical limitations to enjoy gardening in new and accessible ways, and its hands-on sessions are tailored to individual needs.

This includes using ergonomic tools, raised garden beds, and techniques that reduce strain and the risk of injuries. Learn about chronic pain management and adapt your current gardening practices.

By fostering connection, wellbeing and lifelong learning, the program also supports healthy ageing and encourages continued engagement with nature and community.

Previous participant, Angela Usher, said she loved the social aspect of the group and meeting new people.

“The presenter is knowledgeable and laidback, and allows the group to share their experiences,” she said.

“I’ve enjoyed learning how to warm up and cool down before and after gardening, how to lift items safely, how to work safely, and how raised beds can help in gardening to reduce bending.”

The Adaptive Garden Program is supported through a 2025-2026 Age Friendly SA Grant through the Department of Human Services, Office for Ageing Well.

Elizabeth House is one of the City of Onkaparinga’s two positive ageing centres, which bring people together in a safe and friendly environment where they can socialise and connect with others.
