Ageism - the discrimination or stereotyping based on age - is often subtle yet deeply embedded in daily life. It appears in offhand comments, outdated assumptions, and language that paints older people as frail, dependent, or out of touch. These attitudes can shape how people are seen - and how they see themselves - impacting everything from confidence to community inclusion, and health and wellbeing.

In response, a creative new campaign in the City of Onkaparinga invites people of all ages to pause and reflect. Through the Grow Bolder not just older initiative, the council’s Active Ageing and Ability team is encouraging a rethink of what ageing really looks like - and more importantly, what it feels like to be seen and valued at every stage of life.

A striking black and white photographic exhibition is at the heart of the campaign. Displayed in Noarlunga library for SALA, the exhibition drew a strong link between words and perception.

Featuring 15 portraits of local older community members alongside their own words, the exhibition sheds light on the skills, qualities, and life experiences that defy common stereotypes about ageing. Each image tells a different story - one of resilience, creativity, wisdom, or adventure - inviting viewers to reflect on the influence of both language and imagery.

It serves as a reminder that language and images are powerful tools in shaping expectations - in our own lives and in the wider community.

The Grow Bolder exhibition can be viewed from 23-30 September at the Woodcroft Library in collaboration with Woodcroft Community Centre. More details available on Eventbrite: https://AgeingWellExpoWoodcroft.eventbrite.com.au

Celebrating Week of Ageing Well, the exhibition may also be viewed on International Day of Older Persons (1 October) at Wakefield House Positive Ageing Centre, 65 Acre Avenue Morphett Vale. For more information contact the Centre on 08 8384 6158.

Community members are invited to participate by submitting a head and shoulders photograph of themselves and their words online via the City of Onkaparinga Website. These will complement the exhibition on 1 October.
