If you use public transport, you may have noticed that the validators are in the process of being replaced with new smart validators.

This is part of a network-wide ticketing upgrade by Adelaide Metro to make public transport simpler, safer, and easier to use.

The new smart validators allow for commuters to use their Visa or Mastercard to pay for their trips via Tap and Pay.

However, South Australian Seniors Card members can travel for free on Adelaide Metro buses, trains, and trams – all day, every day.

You will continue to use your Seniors Card to validate when boarding public transport but must ensure that any of your Visa or Mastercard cards (on physical bank cards or on a smart phone or device) do not come near the new smart validators.

If you Visa or Mastercard cards or apps (on smart phones or devices) come near enough to the validator to register, your bank account may be debited for the trip fare. This means that you will be charged for a trip that should be free.

To avoid being charged, please ensure that your Visa or Mastercard cards are kept separate from your Seniors Card so that when you validate there is no risk of a payment being debited to your account.

For example, if you keep your Seniors Card in your purse or wallet, remove it to validate so that your Visa or Mastercard cards do not come near the validator. If you are wearing a smart device (like a smart watch), present your Seniors Card to the validator with your other hand.

Should your card be charged by accident, please use one of the following methods to arrange a refund.
