On Wednesday 11 February, South Australia’s Plan for Ageing Well 2026-2036 was launched – a bold and future focused roadmap to ensure that as people live longer, they can also live better.

With Joe Young, Executive Director Ageing, Disability Policy and Safeguarding, Sandy Pitcher, Chief Executive Department of Human Services, former Minister, Nat Cook, Sarah White, Director, Office for Ageing Well and keynote speaker Bernard Salt AM.

The event featured leading Australian demographer, Bernard Salt AM, as keynote speaker to more than 100 people including CEOs and Executives from sectors that must play an important and impactful role in championing and leading ageing well initiatives across our state.

Shaped by the diverse voices of nearly 3,200 South Australians, the plan reflects what older people across the state told us matters most. It elevates the voices and lived experiences of older South Australians and champions positive, human‑rights‑based approaches to ageing.

The most important issues identified were being safe and well, having peace of mind, feeling valued and visible, and staying active, connected and included in communities. The plan outlines a strong, statewide commitment to celebrating ageing, improving accessibility and inclusion, strengthening communities, and ensuring fairer opportunities for those who face greater barriers to ageing well.

The Office of Ageing Well now begins the work of working with stakeholders, sectors and the community to deliver the first five‑year Action Plan. Together, we can build a state where older South Australians are valued, supported and empowered to liver well at every stage of life.
