For generations of South Australians, John Martin’s was more than a department store, it was a retail institution.

Under the Hayward family’s ownership, ‘Johnnies’ created cherished traditions from the Magic Cave to the Christmas Pageant, while also employing thousands across its five stores and the Lockleys bulk store.

This May, as part of the South Australian History Festival, author Paul Flavel will honour what would have been John Martin’s 160th year, had it not closed in 1998. Through rich stories and archival treasures, Paul will explore everything from shopfloor dramas to the exceptional staff training that made Johnnies a memorable place to shop and work. A highlight of the program is a special 20‑minute preview of the upcoming documentary produced by ABCX, a local production team.

Whether you’re a nostalgia buff, former employee or loyal customer, join Paul for a heartfelt journey back to John Martin’s.
