Looking to connect with others? City of Marion offers free programs aimed at establishing relationships across generations.

Marion Libraries, supported by Office for Ageing Well, is running a suite of programs bringing together three components - intergenerational connectedness, people seeking new experiences and relationships, and the power of storytelling.

These programs aim to reduce social isolation and develop intergenerational connections through storytelling, story sharing and story creating. The programs also challenge ageism by valuing each participant’s knowledge and life experience, regardless of age.

In 2023, three programs were offered:

  • Words Within Us – a program designed to connect teens with older residents to capture a life story via various media.
  • Intergenerational Storytelling – an opportunity for older residents to connect with children in local childcare by listening to a story and sharing morning tea.
  • Intergenerational Play –older residents participating in activities such as craft and reading with students from the local out of school hours care.

Results from these initial programs demonstrated an increase in feelings of value and connectedness amongst participants as evidenced by feedback received:

My neighbour said I seemed a little happier the last few weeks, I think it’s this program.” – Hallett Cove resident, 74 years old.

I appreciated working with a younger person; she was the perfect partner, sensitive, compassionate, patient and IT literate.” – Marion resident, 71 years old.

“It took a lot to get out and have a go. I really enjoyed myself and have got more confidence.” – Sturt resident, 65 years old.
