Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA) and Aged Rights Advocacy Service (ARAS) are partnering to stage the 2024 Australian Elder Abuse Conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 22-24 July 2024.
The conference, Turn up the Volume!, will continue to shine a light on the uncomfortable truths about elder abuse and neglect, and what’s being done to generate change.
With the number of older Australians expected to double in the next 25 years to around nine million people, the organisations say it’s never been more important to repudiate ageism, uphold the principles of equality and confront the issues.
EAAA and ARAS will present the conference in a hybrid format (online and face-to-face).
Philippa McDonald, a highly regarded journalist with 30 years at the ABC will be Emcee with keynote speakers Jane Caro, a Walkley Award-winning columnist, author, feminist, and education activist and Tracey Curro, former 60 Minutes reporter.
Topics to be addressed at the conference include:
- Elevating the rights and celebrating the wisdom of older Australians
- Ageism Unveiled: breaking stereotypes and embracing diversity
- Financial safety: recognising and preventing financial abuse
- Reshaping discussions around elder abuse
- Navigating the intersection of dementia and elder abuse
- Exploring elder abuse in indigenous communities
- LGBTQI+ inclusivity
- Coercion, capacity and consent.
The online program will be updated as additional speakers and topics are confirmed.
