Department of Human Services is reviewing the Carers Recognition Act 2005 to ensure better recognition for unpaid carers. The legislation relates to unpaid carers that is, people who provide care, but not as their occupation.

Eleven percent of the Australian population are carers with 245,000 unpaid carers in South Australia. Nationally in 2020, unpaid carers provided 2.2 billion hours of care.

Carers do matter and play an important role in our community.

There are six questions to consider:

  1. How do you think carers should be praised and thanked?
  2. Who do you think should be called a carer?
  3. Do you think that carers are praised and thanked enough?
  4. Have you heard about any changes that gave more praise and thanks to carers?
  5. Can you think of any times that were missed to do something important for carers?
  6. Do you have ideas about how Department of Human Services can talk to carers about
    1. services used by them,
    2. services used by the people who have carers?
