Virtual Reality (VR) is a powerful and accessible technological tool offering many benefits, including in aged care. These may range from supporting activities that delay the onset of dementia, to building stronger bonds between consumers through shared experiences. By removing physical and mental barriers, VR can provide older adults with the confidence to get involved in social activities.

In collaboration with SilVR Adventures and supported by Office for Ageing Well through Grants for Seniors 2022-2023, Barunga Village’s recent six-month pilot project provided people the opportunity to travel overseas, explore an underwater tour of the Galapagos Islands and even attend an orchestra performance!

The SilVR Adventures library of virtual tours has been specifically developed to match the interests and requirements of older adults. Led by the knowledgeable and calming voice of a virtual tour guide, participants can share their experiences with others, and reminisce for weeks to come.

Group VR experiences have improved social wellbeing in older adults, with participants feeling more relaxed and outgoing, more likely to feel positive emotions and less likely to feel socially isolated.

Barunga Village’s retirement village, Barunga by the Sea, hosted its first VR session where residents experienced an African safari. There were elephants and lions all within reach, and residents found the experience amazing!

Barunga by the Sea resident, Miranda van der Keyl said she was immersed within the experience when she visited the jungle.

“Being at the feet of an African elephant walking into water towards me and then almost being able to lean forward and shake the hand of a gorilla, allowed me to cross boundaries that would otherwise have been unimaginable. I found it truly enthralling,” she said.

Weekly sessions have now been added to the Barunga by the Sea activities calendar.

The VR program is available to all Barunga Village residents across the retirement, community and residential sector. It aims to support people develop and maintain meaningful connections with each other and the community and stay engaged in enjoyable activities and experiences within their own home or in a community environment.
