On a fine day in May 2023, the Yuratu Mathanha Elders set forth on a return to Country journey to the Yorke Peninsula. The theme of their much-anticipated trip being Colour on Country, signaling a long-awaited return to Country for many of the group’s older members.

Leaving Adelaide, the women headed towards the Yorke Peninsula with their first stop the Newchurch Horticulture Bush Tucker Farm, an Aboriginal owned and operated market garden in Port Victoria. After a leisurely stroll around the gardens with their host, Ron Newchurch, the women were treated to some fresh local produce for lunch.

The women then travelled to the Point Pearce Mission School for a tour and viewing of historical and contemporary photographs of Aboriginal people who have attended, or taught at, the Point Pearce Mission School over the years.

The following day, the women participated in several workshops, facilitated by Alison Cain - InComPro’s Community Inclusion Officer. One session focused on supporting the women to write about their hopes and expectations and to share these with the group. Throughout the entire trip, the women had plenty of opportunities for taking photos and capturing colour on Country.

The Elders enjoyed the entire experience with one of them penning: “I woke up at 3am, looked out of my cabin window and saw a beautiful reflection of the moon.” This experience inspired her to create an art piece that symbolised the moon’s reflection.

Another Elder wrote: “It made me really connect to country, breathing in the fresh air, looking at the sea and, while driving, it was amazing to see the birds flying by with one black bird keeping pace with our vehicle.”

To make this return to Country trip a reality for the Yuratu Mathanha Elders, InComPro was fortunate to be supported by Office for Ageing Well though Grants for Seniors 2022 – 2023.

Established in 2018, InComPro’s Yuratu Mathanha Elders meet every second Tuesday of the month at InComPro, Salisbury North. The group comprises older Aboriginal women from all walks of life and reflects Aboriginal language groups from across South Australia – from as far north as Adnyamathanha to more locally from Kaurna Plains. In addition to excursions, the women participate in a range of activities including art and craft, silk painting, sewing and cooking.

The group is always keen for other senior Aboriginal women to join their growing numbers. For more information about InComPro, the Yuratu Mathanha Elders and other InComPro programs please visit www.incompro.com.au, email info@incompro.com.au or call 08 7324 5072.
