Supporting South Australians with aphasia since 1999, Aphasia SA now offers special interest groups for people with aphasia and their carers.

Aphasia is a language difficulty caused by injury to the brain affecting a person’s communication abilities. Aphasia SA strives to support people with aphasia to engage in the community socially.

By introducing new special interest groups, participants can learn new and interesting skills while being supported with their communication by those who understand.

On the first Monday of each month Aphasia SA runs an Art Group where people with aphasia and their carers can participate in creative projects, including mosaic frames.

On other Mondays a Physical Therapist experienced in working with people with aphasia, leads an Exercise Group with exercises suitable for all fitness levels and personalised to each participant, to improve strength, balance, and endurance. The instructor explains and demonstrates the exercises to make them easy to follow. Participants enjoy chatting and listening to music while exercising and have noticed their fitness is improving. The activity is followed by tea and coffee as and the group socialises, chatting about things like using technology, fatigue management and communication issues.

Aphasia SA was supported by Office for Ageing Well through Grants for Seniors 2022-2023.
